Study Information

New Zealand Clinical Research is trialling an investigational anti-viral medicine that could help treat a group of viruses known as betacoronaviruses.

Betacoronaviruses have caused serious outbreaks in the past, including SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. There are currently very few approved antiviral treatments for these viruses, and none for some types. This means there is an ongoing need to develop safe and effective medicines that could be used in future outbreaks or pandemics.

GS-1701 is designed to be taken by mouth and to work against a wide range of betacoronaviruses. By targeting several viruses in this group, it may help provide better treatment options and improve preparedness for future pandemics.

This is an investigational drug because it has not been approved by New Zealand MedSafe or other drug regulatory authorities. Clinical trials involve an investigational drug and some study assessments.

This study (HDEC reference #: 24920) is being funded by Gilead Sciences, Inc. and has been approved by the Health and Disability Ethics Committee.
